‘This sand bar was a convenient haven for bird life but the rising tides devoured the land space a matter of minutes after this photo was taken. The birds were pushed in closer and closer together until they were forced to abandon it and seek shelter elsewhere.‘

Tides and shifting sands mean the Kimberley coast is ever evolving and moving in a graceful dance. Sometimes when the tides, the shifting sands and the light come together in harmony the result can be magical.
Cyclone creek is an oasis of calm. Traditionally a shelter from storms, this lagoon is a serene fishing spot only accessible through the treacherous currents at its entrance.

We travelled deep into the remote Kimberley by ship and had our first taste of the region the day before, after 8 years living in the area and being so close yet so far I was hooked. I woke one of the crew long before dawn and seeing my child-like excitement rowed me to a remote beach in time for one of the most stunning sunsets I’ve experienced.
The quiet and calm was shocking. This was the first time I’d heard the Kimberley breathe and felt it’s presence as an entity. I can feel it still.

‘We anchored in this place in the night, I awoke on the deck with the boundless sky above showing the first breaths of sunrise. I took my photo and we departed shortly after. It still feels like I only visited this place in a dream.’
