Stuart Tatnell

I was born - Dunedin New Zealand in 1952. I spent most of my life working-timber which required me to be plumb, level, square and true as a carpenter

Working with the Palm Pods allows me to feel pleasure working with organic shapes that have integrity and humble beauty

My processes include re-hydration of the dry palm pod after which I set the shape and allow the pod to dry out once again. Inks, Paint washes and dyes are added to Provide colour. I always try to keep the colouring quite restrained as the grain in the pods can be very beautiful.

I apply the finish to each piece by using resin and then sanding back. Repeating this process 20 times or more to achieve the deep glossy finish which pays tribute to grain of the pod and the shape it has become

I finish them off with a final cut back and polish to create the finished look.
